Jerome Dees Engages Students in Discussion on Mass Incarceration

On October 7, 2017, Jerome was invited by the Southern Region of the Black Law Students' Association to talk about Ava DuVernay's Academy Award Nominated documentary "13th." While acknowledging the film's focus on the failed War on Drugs and the systemic underpinnings of the criminal justice system, Jerome challenged the students hailing from all over the state to examine the data which suggests that for any significant reform to occur, a reduction in prison admissions for non-violent offenses and an overall review of sentence lengths must be implemented. Other topics addressed included the provision of both mental health and substance abuse treatment and vocational training to decrease the chances of recidivism.
